Before You Make Your Muhurat Move: 7 Rules Every Trader Must Follow

Written by Khyati Saxena khyati saxena

Overview

Muhurat trading looks like a festive formality, but the trades are real and the session is short, thin and emotionally charged. This guide explains the segment-wise 2026 schedule for equity, F&O and commodity derivatives, the pitfalls that commonly catch traders in a one-session window, and seven rules for trading with a plan instead of festive enthusiasm. Timings should be confirmed against the exchange circulars before placing orders.

Introduction: What is Muhurat Trading and Why Does Strategy Matter?

Muhurat trading is a special, symbolic trading session held on Diwali, the Hindu new year for traders, to mark the start of a new Samvat. Muhurat trading 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026, and opens Samvat 2083. The main equity session lasts 70 minutes, and trades placed in it are real, with the same rules, charges and risks as any other session.

Several pitfalls are common:

  • Volatility: prices can move sharply in a short window.
  • Thin liquidity: fewer participants can mean wider spreads and unexpected fills.
  • Emotional trading: festive optimism can push traders into impulsive decisions.

Blending faith with financial discipline calls for a plan made before the session opens. Jainam’s guides on muhurat trading in the Indian stock market and muhurat trading vs regular trading give background.

Rule In short
1. Confirm the schedule Check the NSE, BSE and MCX circulars shortly before the session
2. Treat it as symbolic Apply the same research as any other session
3. Set a budget and plan Fix a maximum amount at risk before the session
4. Use limit orders Control the price in thin liquidity
5. Control size and leverage Keep positions small and losses limited
6. Ignore festive sentiment Decide on risk management, not mood
7. Know costs and rules Understand charges, settlement and broker square-off

The 7 Rules Every Trader Must Follow for Muhurat Trading

These muhurat trading rules apply across segments, and exchange rules and the broker’s terms stay in force. Exchange requirements are separated from broker-specific policies in each rule.

Rule 1: Confirm the Schedule from the Exchange Circulars

Timings differ by segment and can be revised. The official NSE, BSE and MCX circulars should be checked directly shortly before the session in case of revisions, and the trading platform should be tested ahead of time. The session falls on a Sunday this year, so no regular weekday routine applies.

Rule 2: Make Research-Led Decisions, Even on a Special Occasion

Muhurat trading is an important occasion but the parameters for judging a trade remain the same. Before placing an order evaluate the company fundamentals, price levels, market conditions and risk. A festive session is no substitute for research and a trade should meet the investment or trading criteria you would apply on any other day. Jainam’s Muhurat Trading Schedule guide explains the significance of the session.

Rule 3: Prepare a Trading Plan Before the Session Opens

A trading plan transforms an idea into a firm decision. Before Muhurat Trading begins, write down what you are trading, why you are trading, entry price, size of trade, exit conditions and maximum loss you are willing to take. Know ahead of time what will break the trade and what you are willing to risk. This preparation will help you not to make hasty decisions during the short session and not let the festive excitement affect your execution.

Rule 4: Use Limit Orders in Thin Liquidity

Fewer participants can widen the gap between buy and sell prices. Limit orders set the maximum price paid or the minimum price received, while market orders may fill at an unexpected price. A limit order does not guarantee execution, and it may remain unfilled. Small, liquid stocks deserve extra caution.

Rule 5: Control Position Size and Leverage

Volatility magnifies leverage. Intraday positions and derivatives need strict loss limits, and F&O traders should be certain of margin requirements, expiry details and square-off rules. A loss limit decided in advance protects against emotion, though a stop-loss order may not execute at the intended price during a sharp move.

Rule 6: Do Not Follow Festive Sentiment

Sentiment in the session is traditionally optimistic, but optimism does not guarantee gains. A stock moving with the crowd is not a reason to buy it. Decisions should rest on risk management and the plan, not on the mood of the day.

Rule 7: Know the Costs, Settlement and Square-Off Rules

Brokerage, statutory charges and exchange fees apply as usual. Settlement is an exchange matter: for example, an NSE Clearing notice states that certain currency derivatives trades for 6 and 8 November are to be settled on 9 November 2026, and each segment’s own circular should be checked. Auto-square-off is a broker policy, and times can fall before the exchange close. Jainam publishes its charges on its pricing page.

Muhurat Trading 2026 Schedule & Segment Timings

  • Muhurat Trading will take place on Sunday, 8 November 2026, to mark Diwali Laxmi Pujan and the beginning of Samvat 2083.
  • The main equity trading session is scheduled from 2:20 PM to 3:30 PM IST, while NSE equity derivatives are scheduled to trade until 3:40 PM.
  • MCX has published a separate schedule for commodity derivatives.
  • The muhurat trading timings for pre-open, auction, trade-modification and post-close sessions differ by exchange and segment, so the relevant circular should be checked before orders are placed.

Capital Market (Equities)

NSE circular Ref. No. 149/2026, dated 19 October 2026, lists the following for the NSE capital market. BSE issued its own notice on the same date with a separate, detailed schedule, so BSE timings should be read from that notice.

Activity (NSE) Time (IST)
Block deal session 1:50 PM to 2:05 PM
Pre-open order entry 2:05 PM to 2:15 PM
Pre-open matching and buffer 2:15 PM to 2:20 PM
Continuous trading begins 2:20 PM
Normal market close, closing auction (CAS) securities 3:15 PM
Closing auction order entry 3:20 PM to 3:30 PM
Closing auction matching 3:30 PM to 3:35 PM
Normal market close, non-CAS securities 3:30 PM
Post-close session 3:50 PM to 4:00 PM
Trade modification window 2:20 PM to 4:15 PM

The circular also lists separate timings for a special pre-open session for IPO and relisted securities and a call-auction session for illiquid securities. These apply only to eligible securities. Trades executed in the session create settlement obligations.

Futures & Options (F&O)

NSE equity derivatives follow a segment-specific schedule and are not the same as the cash market.

Activity (NSE equity F&O) Time (IST)
Pre-open 2:05 PM to 2:20 PM
Continuous trading 2:20 PM to 3:40 PM
Trade modification 2:20 PM to 3:50 PM

The cash-market closing auction is not an F&O feature. Square-off and expiry arrangements for F&O positions should be confirmed with the broker and the NSE equity derivatives circular, whose number and date should be added at publication.

Commodity Derivatives

MCX circular MCX/TRD/590/2026, dated 19 October 2026, sets the following. MCX publishes its schedule separately from the NSE and BSE segments.

Session Time (IST)
Special session 2:05 PM to 2:19 PM
Trading session 2:20 PM to 3:30 PM
Client code modification 2:20 PM to 3:45 PM

Contracts in all commodities and indices are available for trading in the session. Jainam’s muhurat trading page and MCX holidays guide list related notices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, intraday trading is permitted during the applicable trading session. The equity session is scheduled from 2:20 PM to 3:30 PM, while NSE equity derivatives are scheduled until 3:40 PM. Brokers may set an earlier auto-square-off cut-off for intraday positions, so the applicable time should be confirmed with the broker before trading.

Shares bought in the session are real purchases. Standard brokerage, statutory charges and clearing obligations apply to executed orders. Trades executed in the session create settlement obligations, but arrangements can differ by segment because the session falls on a Sunday. The relevant segment’s circular and the broker’s instructions give the settlement date.

Sentiment is traditionally optimistic and symbolic, but prices remain subject to volatility, low volumes and broader global factors. Trades should rest on risk management, not on sentiment alone.

Eligible clients with an active trading account can participate in the segments enabled for their account, subject to exchange and broker requirements. A demat account is required where the transaction involves holding equity shares in dematerialised form. Participation is optional.

No. Equity and NSE equity derivatives differ in their closing and trade modification times, and MCX publishes its own schedule. The circular for each segment should be checked.
